Van Der Heyden Vineyards

I write about wine the way I talk about it in the tasting room. No scripts, no scores. Just what I notice in the glass after years of pouring and paying attention.

About us

I didn’t grow up in wine, but I found my way into it in my early twenties after taking a seasonal job during harvest in Northern California. What started as a temporary gig turned into something I stuck with, season after season. I learned by doing—pruning in the winter, fixing irrigation lines in the summer, and asking a lot of questions along the way.

Over time, I moved into more responsibility, helping manage vineyard blocks and working closely with small producers who cared about getting things right in the field. That hands-on experience is what shapes most of what I write here. I’m usually focused on what’s happening on the ground—how weather shifts a season, how soil behaves in different spots, and how small changes can make a noticeable difference.

This site is where I keep track of those observations. Some posts come from my own work in the vineyard, others from time spent walking rows with growers and hearing how they handle the same challenges. It’s a mix of notes, stories, and things I’ve learned the hard way.
